Functional Mechanics of a Pectin-Based Pleural Sealant after Lung Injury.
2017
Pleural injury and associated air leaks are a major influence on patient morbidity and healthcare costs after lung surgery. Pectin, a plant-derived heteropolysaccharide, has recently demonstrated potential as an adhesive binding to the glycocalyx of visceral mesothelium. Since bioadhesion is a process likely involving the interpenetration of the pectin-based polymer with the glycocalyx, we predicted that the pectin-based polymer may also be an effective sealant for pleural injury. To explore the potential role of an equal (weight%) mixture of high-methoxyl pectin and carboxymethylcellulose as a pleural sealant, we compared the yield strength of the pectin-based polymer to commonly available…
Recombinant mussel protein Pvfp-5β: A potential tissue bioadhesive
2019
During their lifecycle, many marine organisms rely on natural adhesives to attach to wet surfaces for movement and self-defence in aqueous tidal environments. Adhesive proteins from mussels are biocompatible and elicit only minimal immune responses in humans. Therefore these proteins have received increased attention for their potential applications in medicine, biomaterials and biotechnology. The Asian green mussel Perna viridis secretes several byssal plaque proteins, molecules that help anchor the mussel to surfaces. Among these proteins, protein-5β (Pvfp-5β) initiates interactions with the substrate, displacing interfacial water molecules before binding to the surface. Here, we establis…
Current dental adhesives systems. A narrative review.
2012
Adhesive dentistry is based on the development of materials which establish an effective bond with the tooth tissues. In this context, adhesive systems have attracted considerable research interest in recent years. Successful adhesive bonding depends on the chemistry of the adhesive, on appropriate clinical handling of the material as well as on the knowledge of the morphological changes caused on dental tissue by different bonding procedures. This paper outlines the status of contemporary adhesive systems, with particular emphasis on chemical characteristics and mode of interaction of the adhesives with enamel and dentinal tissues. Dental adhesives are used for several clinical application…
ROUTINARY USE OF FIBRIN SEALANTS TO PREVENT PROLONGED AIR LEAK IN THORACIC SURGERT: OUR EXPERIENCE
2019
Introduction: prolonged air leak (PAL) is one of the most common postoperative complications after lung surgery. It is associatred with increased significant morbidity, lower quality of life, longer hospital stay and higher hospital costs. Since its great clinical and economic burden, it is important to establish the feasibility and the effectiveness of the routinary preventive use of a fibrin sealant in order to reduce the incidence of prolonged air leaks. Patients and methods: this is a randomized study on 189 adult patients - 118 men (62,4%) and 71 women (37,6%) aged from 39 to 87 y.o. (mean age 68,3 y.o.) - who underwent lung surgery (lobectomy or bilobectomy) with intraoperatory detect…
Transcatheter embolization of a renal artery pseudoaneurysm after open partial nephrectomy.
2011
Twelve days after an open partial nephrectomy, a 31-year-old man was re-admitted urgently for acute lumbar pain. An emergent helical computed tomography scan with intravenous contrast revealed a 3-cm renal artery pseudoaneurysm at the site of the partial nephrectomy, which was responsible for a large perirenal hematoma. Transarterial hyperselective embolization successfully occluded the pseudoaneurysm with less than 1 mL of N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, an embolizing agent less costly than coils. The kidney parenchyma was fully preserved.
Does the use of fibrin glue prevent seroma formation after axillary lymphadenectomy for breast cancer? A prospective randomized trial in 159 patients.
2010
Background Seroma formation frequently occurs in patients who have undergone axillary lymphadenectomy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of fibrin glue in the prevention of seroma formation after axillary lymphadenectomy. Materials and Methods Hundred fifty-nine breast cancer patients about to undergo quadrantectomy or mastectomy plus axillary lymphadenectomy were enrolled in the study and randomized into two groups. Fibrin glue spray applied to the axillary fossa plus placement of closed suction drainage were used in 80 patients (group A); placement of closed suction drainage was only used in 79 patients (group B). Results Group A patients showed a slight advantage with regar…
Resistance to demineralisation of adjacent enamel and dentine, fluoride release and dentine bond strength of fluoride-containing self-etch adhesive s…
2019
Background The current study aimed to assess the amount of fluoride released from fluoride-containing dental adhesives and its effect on micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS) and on resistance to demineralisation of dentine and enamel. Material and Methods Two fluoride-containing dental adhesives, and a fluoride-free adhesive were used as experimental adhesives. After thermal cycling the µ-TBS of adhesives to dentine and the failure mode were assessed. The fluoride release and cross-sectional microhardness (CSMH) of specimens were measured before and after one day, 7 and 28 days of pH-cycling. The data were analysed using one-way ANOVA, Weibull statistics and repeated measures ANOVA. Results T…
Fibrin Sealants in Dura Sealing: A Systematic Literature Review.
2016
BACKGROUND:Fibrin sealants are widely used in neurosurgery to seal the suture line, provide watertight closure, and prevent cerebrospinal fluid leaks. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize the current efficacy and safety literature of fibrin sealants in dura sealing and the prevention/treatment of cerebrospinal fluid leaks. METHODS:A comprehensive electronic literature search was run in the following databases: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Resister of Controlled Trials, clinicaltrials.gov, MEDLINE/PubMed, and EMBASE. Titles and abstracts of potential articles of interest were reviewed independently by 3 of the authors. RESULTS:A total of 1006 databas…
Effect of hemostatic agent on marginal gaps of class V giomer restorations
2017
Background Contamination of dentin with hemostatic agents might exert a deleterious effect on adhesive procedures on dentin. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of aluminum chloride hemostatic agent on marginal gaps in Cl V giomer restorations. Material and Methods Fifty sound bovine permanent incisors were selected for the purpose of this in vitro study and Cl V cavities were prepared on their buccal surfaces; the gingival margins of the cavities were placed in dentin. The tooth samples were randomly assigned to two groups (n=25). The samples in groups 1 and 2 underwent a restorative procedure without and with the application of aluminum chloride hemostatic agent in …
